As of late 15 September, at least 112 people have reportedly been detained in connection with recent operations, including 43 LGBTI+ rights defenders. At least 62 people have been arrested, including 16 LGBTI+ activists or people connected to LGBTI+ organisations, while judicial proceedings continue in Istanbul.
The scale and targeting of these actions raise serious concerns for freedom of association, expression and the ability of human rights defenders to carry out their work without fear of intimidation or criminalisation. Individuals being held solely because of their human rights work should be immediately released.
LGBTI+ advocacy is human rights work. Civil society organisations must be able to organise, speak and support their communities without being treated as a threat simply because of who they represent or the rights they defend.
We stand in solidarity with LGBTI+ people, organisations and human rights defenders in Türkiye. We urge the Turkish authorities to uphold fundamental freedoms, ensure due process for everyone affected, and end measures that criminalise or obstruct legitimate human rights work.
The pressing LGBTI+ human rights challenges of our day can only be solved through collaboration, whether that be with grassroots or international human rights organisations, governments and funding bodies – and people that really care, like you.
