Across the Commonwealth, LGBTI+ communities are living through a moment of profound contradiction. In one country, hard-won victories against criminalisation are being celebrated. In another, rights once secured are stripped away overnight.
Our latest update tracks this shifting ground, documenting the breakthroughs, the setbacks, and the worrying global trend of regression. As of August 2025, 61 countries still criminalise homosexuality, 7 impose the death penalty, and just 17 recognise non-binary identities. These numbers lay bare the uneven and fragile state of progress across the Commonwealth.
