Today, the UK government has announced a £21 million commitment to support global LGBTI+ rights over the next three years, amid growing international pressure on human rights defenders, democratic institutions, and civil society organisations.
The funding will support activists working towards legal reform, including in countries that continue to criminalise homosexuality, and strengthen the capacity of LGBTI+ organisations and movements advancing the rights and freedoms of our communities around the world.
Coming 15 months after the UK government’s decision to reduce foreign aid, today’s announcement marks a significant renewed commitment to advancing LGBTI+ rights globally and follows sustained advocacy from across the LGBTI+ movement.
Responding to the announcement, Alex Farrow, CEO of Kaleidoscope Trust, said:
“Today’s announcement is a hugely important and timely commitment from the UK government, and one that sends a powerful message at a critical moment for human rights globally.
While the funding itself is vital, this commitment also reminds us that LGBTI+ activists and our allies are on the right side of history. At a time when some governments are quietly stepping back, we welcome the UK government’s decision not to – despite enormous global political pressure and tension.
At Kaleidoscope Trust, we believe governments can make a profound difference, whether through long-term funding, behind-the-scenes diplomacy, and visible public support for equality and human rights. We’re grateful for the UK government’s action as well as words.
One of our roles at Kaleidoscope Trust is to help ensure that the UK government is the best possible ally in the global fight for equality. I am proud of the small part we have played in helping make this commitment possible, and we thank everyone who has supported this effort.”
Kaleidoscope Trust is proud of our ongoing partnership with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office through long-term funding agreements, as well as additional support that has enabled us to respond rapidly to crises and emergencies affecting LGBTI+ communities around the world.
