Who This Research Is For: 

We are seeking to speak with individuals who:

Have been directly or indirectly impacted by cuts to international aid affecting LGBTI+ work, including but not limited to:

• • Loss or reduction of funding
  • Programme closures or scaling back of activities
  • Staff reductions or organisational instability
  • Reduced services or support for LGBTI+ communities.

We aim to ensure broad geographic representation across regions. For this reason, participation will be selective, and not all applicants will be invited to take part.

About the Interview:

• Interviews will be semi-structured and conducted by a trained researcher with experience in LGBTI+ issues.
• Interviews will last approximately 1 hour and will be conducted in English.
• With consent, interviews will be recorded and transcribed for research purposes.
• All interviews will be treated as confidential, and participants may choose to remain anonymous in any outputs.

Attendance and Compensation:

Participants will receive financial compensation of £150 amount for their time, provided as a fixed honorarium following successful completion of the interview. 

Interviews will be scheduled in advance at a mutually agreed time. If a participant does not attend their scheduled interview without providing reasonable notice in advance, they will forfeit their interview slot and will not be eligible to receive compensation.

If circumstances change, participants are encouraged to inform the research team as early as possible so that rescheduling can be considered.

Selection Process: 

This research uses a combination of purposive and snowball sampling. Participants will be selected to reflect a diversity of regions, organisational roles, and experiences of funding cuts. For this reason, submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee participation.

Safeguarding and Ethics:

Participation is voluntary. Interviewees may decline to answer any question or withdraw from the interview at any time. The research follows strict ethical, safeguarding, and do-no-harm principles.

Prior to participation, all research participants will be provided with an information sheet outlining the purpose of the research, the aims of the study, what participation would involve, and how the data would be used and managed. Participants will be given the opportunity to review this information before providing written informed consent to participate.

At the beginning of each recorded interview, verbal consent will be obtained again to confirm participants’ willingness to proceed. Before recording commenced, participants will also be invited to ask any questions regarding the research, the interview process, or their participation, ensuring they have a clear understanding of the study and their participation.

Participation is entirely voluntary throughout the research process. Participants can decline to answer any question, pause or stop the interview at any time, and withdraw from the study without providing a reason. 

Participants will be offered a choice regarding how they wished to be identified in the research outputs. They can elect to be identified by their full name, a pseudonym, their organisational affiliation only, or remain fully anonymous. These preferences will be recorded during the consent process and respected throughout the analysis, writing, and dissemination of the research findings.

Given the sensitive nature of this research, maintaining appropriate standards of security and confidentiality was a central ethical consideration. All research data were stored on password-protected, secure Kaleidoscope Trust servers, with access restricted to authorised members of the research team. Unless participants explicitly consented to attribution, all identifiable names, job titles, and organisational affiliations were anonymised. Direct quotations were only included where they could not reasonably identify the speaker or where explicit consent for attribution had been obtained. To further protect participants’ confidentiality, all video recordings will be permanently deleted one year after the completion of the project. Interview transcripts will be anonymised prior to archiving to ensure that no personally identifiable information is retained in the archived research data.
