The Kaleidoscope Trust welcome’s the Department for International Development’s publication of its approach to LGBT rights and international development.

It reflects the growing consensus that protecting the rights of LGBT people beneficial to economic development and integral to social development.

Throughout the modern era of development LGBT people have been excluded from the benefits of economic and social development, facing barriers in access to basic services, such as education and health care.

Given the recent adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals which promise to ‘leave no one behind’ it is a crucial time for DFID to demonstrate how it will promote    development for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Kaleidoscope Trust welcomes DFID’s commitments to:

  • Recognition of LGBT rights as a ‘core development issue’.

  • Increased Engagement with LGBT civil society.

  • International Dialogue initiated by DFID and Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) to increase high level support for the human rights of LGBT people.

  • Developing and Utilising Evidence to support policy and programmes.

The Trust will continue to work with DFID to support implementation of the approach in DFID partner countries particularly in ensuring LGBT rights defenders are able to access UK support. We are particularly keen that this approach is undertaken with enhance cross government cohesion, particularly with the FCO’s human rights work and funding initiatives.
